Busy Busy Year

Well I thought I was getting back into the blogging of projects and interests but things quickly became busy and hectic. I started a placement at a furniture makers called Parker and Farr and seem to of joined the team at the right time with great projects and great opportunities within design. I am now currently in my final year of studies at Nottingham Trent also so my "free" time is limited in these things I enjoyed doing. To give an update on my projects I have just completed my minor project on my course. I will go into greater details in another blog post but here is a quick image showing the final outcome. ( it's a task lamp by the way)  My next project is looking into small spaces, modular furniture and the "workspace" that will hopefully have an interesting design outcome. I am also looking into sustainability for my dissertation looking at a blue sky project into the design of dishwashers specifically. Plastics project

The brief "Design a product to help those with physical or cognitive impairments that is also appealing to the mass market. Whether your solution is an answer to an existing problem or something entirely new, the focus should be on creating a design that is innovative, functional and universally appealing. Your idea could exist in any number of settings – from the home to the workplace, from entertainment to the sports field. "

I researched into a how people cut food in kitchen and the safety of it. Most of the time people’s fingers are really close to the food they are cutting and with past experiences from people asked with cutting fingers instead of food I thought to design a tool that would help the safety of cutting and could be used by people with physical impairments.

The design of slyce allows the user to clamp the food between the two walls using only there body. All that needs to be done then is to cut the food as you normally would safer.

Jean Genet Inspired guitar amp

After recently visiting the Nottingham contemporary where Jean Genet is exibiting and there was a few pieces of furniture that had been coverd in bits of newspaper which made me more interested in the shape and the finish on the furniture there. I want to apply this to future designs maybe to add a story and interest to my furniture but for now, I descided to transform an old guitar amp to see how it would look.

Shortlisted Paul Smith Changing Room

My most enjoyed project this year at university has to be this live project with Paul Smith. The project was to Design a free standing changing room, some of the Paul Smith stores are large open plan spaces and a free standing changing room offers a truly blank canvas for creativity – the structure itself, the interior but also meeting the practical needs of the customer.

from these videos and his online blog, showing his likes for all forms of art, and his likes for colour. But the main inspiration came from his studio where he "collected" objects that inspired him and made things more "fun". The idea of a message board came into mind as a place to store objects.

Victoria Centre Seating Final Majour Project college

I linked the relations between the already popular Emett clock in the shoping centre with Joris Laarmans seating designs

inspiration from Daniel Widrig-Brazil. I like the curves and organic feel to the chair.

Final project at college, I choose to design seating for Victoria Shopping centre Nottingham. Showing my early days on auto cad and the inspirations for my final outcome.Final model was 3D printed.

Lace Market Bench (inspiration)

The reason I choose to design the benches for the Lace Market was the current benches where poorly designed and easily damaged.

I then researched into products already inspired by lace such as Marcel Wanders Crochet table and Lace fence by Demakersvan. These seemed very interesting but the shapes seemed very simple. So I researched into more organic forms.

Matthias Pliessnig's benches give a very organic look that would fit in well with the tree designs in the court yard.

Frank Gehrys visitor’s bench and Lucile Soufflet benches have a very similar design to the tops of the tree and have a easier form of manufacture to the Matthias Pliessnig seating

Using the shapes from the design on the lace that i had collected I came up with a shape i felt looked and would work well.

using the insperation from gehrys bench i then reflected the shape to create the final design and feel i have come out with a great out come.Final Design
